Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Is Dredging Legal?
YES, regulatory agencies allow for Maintenance Dredging. As long as the requested dredging can be demonstrated as maintenance, it can be permitted.

How deep can my slip be dredged?
Typically, except for certain circumstances, the maximum dredge depth is five feet below mean low water.

What is Mean Low Water (MLW)?
This is a calculated elevation of the average low tide determined by the Army Corps of Engineers.

How long does the process of dredging take?
The typical residential dock dredging takes 2-6 months just to permit, then another 30-60 days to schedule/perform dredging.

Why does the permitting take so long?
There are three regulatory agencies which require permits or exemptions: County Water Navigation Authority, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, US Army Corps of Engineers.

How long will the actual equipment be needed to dredge my dock?

Once scheduled, the actual dredging takes about a week with very minor disturbance.

What is the dredging process?
A hydraulic submersible pump will pump sediments from the dredge area to sealed containers in an area accessible by truck. Once the containers are full to capacity with sediments, they will be removed. The water returning to the dredge area will be filtered.

Where can I find tide information?

The National Data Buoy Center provides current information for Central Florida at www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Central_Florida.shtml
